How Many Litter Boxes per Cat?
A practical starting point is one litter box per cat, plus one extra: cats + 1. That means two boxes for one cat, three for two cats, and four for three cats. Keep them in separate, quiet places so one cat cannot block every option; the count is a starting setup, not a promise that every household will need exactly that number. This count-and-access guidance is also described by Ohio State's Veterinary Medical Center.

Box count by number of cats
The downloadable file uses the same arithmetic shown below. It is a planning aid; add another option when a cat cannot comfortably reach or use the existing locations.
| Cats | Starting box count | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 1 + 1 extra |
| 2 | 3 | 2 + 1 extra |
| 3 | 4 | 3 + 1 extra |
| 4 | 5 | 4 + 1 extra |
| 5 | 6 | 5 + 1 extra |
| 6 | 7 | 6 + 1 extra |
| 7 | 8 | 7 + 1 extra |
| 8 | 9 | 8 + 1 extra |
| 9 | 10 | 9 + 1 extra |
| 10 | 11 | 10 + 1 extra |
The row values are calculated directly from the stated cats + 1 rule. Ohio State also advises separate safe, quiet locations; where a home has multiple floors, its guidance says to offer options on each floor.

Use the count as a layout check
- Put boxes in separate usable areas rather than lining every pan up together; a cluster can behave like one location if another cat controls the route.
- Check that each cat can enter, turn, dig, and leave without being cornered. A larger listed footprint can be useful to compare, but exterior dimensions alone do not prove the usable interior size.
- If a cat avoids a box or starts eliminating elsewhere, do not solve it only by adding more pans. Check access, cleanliness, household conflict, and possible health changes; a sudden change warrants veterinary advice.
Bottom line: start with cats + 1, then verify that the boxes are genuinely separate choices. Use the CSV for the count and the dated retailer table only to compare listed footprints and observed prices.
