How to Dispose of Cat Litter
For most homes, seal used litter in a bag and put it in household trash if local rules allow. Never flush cat litter into a septic system. With municipal sewer, check your utility's rules before considering any product labeled flushable; when rules are unclear, use the trash route. Material labels do not override plumbing limits or local waste rules.

Choose a route by litter type
Start with the conservative route below, then check the product label and the waste program that will actually receive the material. Cat waste is not ordinary garden compost, and the word “biodegradable” does not establish that a local collection program accepts it.
| Used litter or situation | Default route | Check before an exception |
|---|---|---|
| Clumping or non-clumping clay | Seal and put in household trash where accepted. | Do not flush or compost. Check local trash rules for a full-box cleanout. |
| Silica or crystal | Seal and put in household trash where accepted. | Do not assume silica is sewer-safe or compostable; follow product and local waste rules. |
| Tofu, corn, wheat, or other plant-based litter | Bag for household trash unless a locally approved alternative applies. | Only consider flushing when the exact product permits it and the municipal sewer authority allows it. Never flush into septic. |
| Wood or paper pellets | Bag for household trash where accepted. | Compost only if the local program explicitly accepts pet-waste litter. Do not flush into septic. |
| Any litter in a home with septic | Bag and use household trash where accepted. | EPA septic guidance lists cat litter among items not to flush. |
The U.S. EPA says septic systems should receive only human waste and toilet paper, and specifically lists cat litter as a prohibited item. Municipal sewer systems have different local rules; ask the wastewater utility that serves your address.
Can you flush cat litter?
Do not flush litter into a septic system. A “flushable” claim is not permission to use every toilet: clay and silica litter should not be flushed, and plant-based litter still depends on exact product directions and local sewer approval. If either is uncertain, tie it in a bag and use household trash instead. Never flush litter or waste into a storm drain.
Handling matters too. Cat feces can carry Toxoplasma gondii. The CDC advises pregnant or immunocompromised people to ask someone else to change litter when possible; if that is not possible, use disposable gloves and wash hands with soap and water. A toilet or disposal pail does not remove the need for safe handling.
How to use a Litter Genie
A Litter Genie is temporary indoor containment, not the final disposal method. Scoop waste into the pail, close the inner barrier and lid as designed, and when the gathered waste needs to be removed, tie off the liner and put it in household trash where accepted. Follow the instructions for the exact pail and refill: the Easy Roll refill is compatible only with the Easy Roll pail, while standard and jumbo cartridges use their specified pails. The standard refill directions show how to pull the film through the ring, knot the end, and load it into the pail. Keep the unit out of children's reach and wash hands after handling waste.
A real unit-conversion example
Petco lists the continuous-feed standard refill as 14 ft. The NIST international-foot conversion is 1 ft = 0.3048 m: 14 ft × 0.3048 = 4.2672 m, or about 4.27 m. This is the film length stated on the product listing, not the volume or weight of litter it can hold.
Disposal-supply price snapshot
These listing prices and package details were checked on October 4, 2026. They are a dated snapshot, not guaranteed checkout prices; seller, shipping, stock, promotions, and delivery location can change what appears. Different formats are not automatically comparable by capacity.
| Retailer and listing | Displayed size or pack | Displayed price | Observed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petco: Litter Genie Standard Refill | 14 ft continuous-feed film | $13.99 | October 4, 2026 |
| PetSmart: Litter Genie Easy Roll refill | 24 bags; displayed total weight 0.44 lb / 0.19 kg | $19.99 | October 4, 2026 |
| Chewy: beyondGREEN cat-litter waste bags | 100 count | $16.99 | October 4, 2026 |
| Walmart: compostable cat-litter bags | 100 count; seller listing | $25.99 | October 4, 2026 |
| Target: Panther Armor pet-waste bags | 100 count; medium | $18.63 | October 4, 2026 |
| Home Depot: NAMCO Doggy Do waste bags | 100 per pack; 20-pack carton | $123.48 | October 4, 2026 |
PetSmart displays Easy Roll as 24 bags and lists compatibility only with its Easy Roll pail. The retailer also displays the refill's package weight in both pounds and kilograms; the conversion example above uses Petco's film-length specification instead. Walmart and Target listings are third-party marketplace offers. Home Depot's listed carton is a bulk quantity. These are useful to compare formats and observed prices, not a controlled test or a cost-per-use claim.
When “compostable” does not mean curbside compost
Before using a compost route, ask the receiving program whether it accepts both cat waste and the exact litter material. EPA's home-composting guidance lists pet waste and cat litter among items to avoid. A bag's compostability certification applies to the bag under specified processing conditions; it does not prove that cat waste is accepted, that a backyard pile reaches the required conditions, or that a municipal program permits pet waste. If the program's rules do not clearly allow it, use household trash.
Practical rule: bag used litter for trash unless your exact product and local waste authority clearly permit another route. Septic means no flushing. A Litter Genie holds waste indoors until the bag goes to its final disposal route.
