Does Cat Litter Expire?
There is no single expiry period that applies to every cat litter. Check any date or storage direction on the exact package first; if none is given, inspect whether the bag stayed dry and whether the litter still looks, smells, pours, and performs as that product normally should. If moisture, contamination, or a clear product change is present, do not use that batch.

Use this order to check an old bag
- Read the package. Follow an expiration or best-by date and storage instruction if the manufacturer provides one. If the date is missing or unreadable, do not invent a shelf-life deadline; check the product maker's guidance.
- Check the package and storage history. A torn, wet, unsealed, or pest-exposed bag is a reason to set it aside rather than assume the contents are unchanged.
- Inspect a small pour. Compare it with the same product when fresh: look for damp or hardened areas, an unexpected odor, visible contamination, or a pronounced change in dust or texture.
- Check the product's intended performance. For clumping litter, note whether a small test clump still forms and stays together as expected. For non-clumping or crystal products, use the maker's directions and check for moisture or a clear change from the product's normal appearance.
- When uncertain, do not test it on your cat. Set the bag aside and ask the manufacturer about its lot or package date. Replace it if you cannot establish that it was stored as directed.
Moisture is a concrete reason to be cautious: PrettyLitter's own guidance says to keep its product cool and dry and away from moisture-heavy rooms. Its guidance is specific to that product, not a universal shelf-life guarantee for every litter material.

Use the rows as a conservative screen, not as a laboratory test or a guarantee of safety. The six checks separate the package, moisture exposure, visible changes, product behavior, opening and storage history, and what to do when information is missing.
| Check | Lower-concern observation | Stop and investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Package date or directions | Package is intact and any printed date or storage directions are followed. | A printed use-by date has passed, or package directions say to discard. | Follow the exact package or ask the manufacturer; no printed date does not establish a shelf life. |
| Package condition | Bag or container is closed and undamaged. | Bag is torn, wet, open to pests, or the seal failed. | Do not use until the maker confirms the product is suitable. |
| Moisture | Contents are dry with no damp patches. | Dampness, water exposure, or unexplained hard masses are present. | Discard the affected product; do not break up damp clumps for reuse. |
| Odor or visible contamination | No unexpected odor or visible foreign material. | Musty, sour, chemical, or otherwise unusual odor; visible contamination. | Do not use; contact the manufacturer if the cause is unclear. |
| Dust and texture | Pour and granules look consistent with the same product when fresh. | A clear new dust cloud, crumbling texture, or marked color change appears. | Pause use and compare with package guidance or a fresh bag. |
| Opening and storage | Opened bag was promptly resealed and kept cool and dry. | Storage history is unknown or the bag sat in a damp area. | Ask the brand about the product and lot; replace if uncertain. |
How to store cat litter
Keep the litter in its original package when practical, close the package fully after each use, and store it in a cool, dry place away from bathroom or laundry-room moisture. PrettyLitter specifically recommends a cool, dry location and says not to store its bags in bathrooms, laundry rooms, or damp basements. For another brand or material, follow that product's own label rather than treating one brand's directions as universal.
If you use a secondary lidded bin for easier handling, keep the product label and lot information with it, use a clean, completely dry container, and do not mix old and new bags in a way that loses the date or product identity. This is a practical organization method, not a substitute for the manufacturer's storage directions.
One real bag-weight conversion
All six listings below displayed a 20 lb package on the day checked. Using NIST's pound-to-kilogram factor, 20 lb × 0.45359237 kg/lb = 9.0718474 kg, or about 9.07 kg. That converts the package's labeled net weight; it is not the shipping weight or a measure of how long the litter lasts.
Six same-day retail listing snapshots
These product pages were checked on October 4, 2026. Each displayed a 20 lb package; the table records the displayed one-time listing price, not an Autoship or subscription offer. Prices, stock, seller, promotions, tax, and delivery location can change. This is a dated listing snapshot, not a controlled quality comparison.

The six listings cover different products and materials. Their prices are not a quality score, freshness test, or value-per-use ranking. Prices may vary by delivery ZIP code, seller, and promotion; confirm the retailer page before purchasing.
Bottom line: a calendar age alone cannot answer this for every brand. Start with the package; use dry storage; treat moisture, contamination, unusual odor, and a marked performance change as reasons to stop and investigate. When the lot history is unknown, replace the bag rather than guess.
